There’s sNOw fun like Family fun! by VTech Mom

With a good portion of the US getting some amount of snow this month, many of us are starting to feel some cabin fever setting in. “Oh no! Not more snow! Will it ever end?”

Believe it or not, spring will be here before we know it and all this snow will be a distant memory. So, before the snow is gone for good, let’s embrace it and make some fun family snow day memories!

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the snow with your kids is to get outside right in your own backyard or local park! Take a turn sledding down a hill, build a snowman, or create the ultimate snow fort! Looking for some friendly family competition? See who can make the largest snowball or who can throw a snowball the furthest.

My kids also love taking “snowman building” to a whole new level by creating their own snow sculptures! It’s so fun to see their imaginations run wild as they brainstorm how to turn a giant snowball into a dinosaur or cheeseburger! Yup, one of my girls created her own snow-cheeseburger one year!!

If the white winter landscape is getting too drab for you, have the kids go to work “painting the snow”. Just add a few drops of food coloring to some cold water in a spray bottle and you have your very own snow-painting fun!

Before your toes get too cold, take the kids on a winter nature hunt. Rent or borrow cross-country skis or snowshoes and set off on an adventure to investigate what animals, birds and plants are thriving during these cold winter months. Stretch their thinking by asking them questions like “What do you think the animals eat during the winter? How do you think the birds stay warm on cold days?” They’ll love exploring the world around them!

When everyone is ready to go back inside and warm up, be sure to bring some snow inside with you to continue the fun! No, we’re not making a snow fort inside…we’re making Snow Ice Cream! While the kids are collecting some fresh {clean} snow (about 8 cups), quickly whisk together 1 cup of milk, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Then stir in the snow and scoop into dishes! Add some sprinkles and you have the perfect snow day ice cream treat!

Of course all that fun in the snow will call for some warm snuggles with the kids and lots of giggles about all the fun they had ~ my favorite part!

What are some of your family’s favorite ways to play in the snow?
